Sure, this sounds like another doom & gloom rant, but, folks, we need to continue to discuss environmental issues, engage ourselves peacefully, freely, while we still can. We are deceiving ourselves if we think that corporate interests are the compass on how we "progress" through our national commerce and calendar. Scientists, health experts, medical professionals, and activists want us to be awake to the real effects of destroying our planet through excessive strip mining, metal mining, coal burning, oil processing, and other resource excavation. These corporations that engage in this type of industry -- yes, they employ people -- are causing soil erosion, destroying forests and natural habitats, contributing to the elimination of fragile plant and animal species, and poisoning our water and air. This work takes a lot of money, fuel, and other resources to extract this stuff. "I had a great job at the coal mill (mine) but now my son and I can't breathe, have asthma, and our jobs were eliminated, no health insurance."

As citizens (consumers), our recycling and "band-aids" of limiting our water consumption, for example, are literally "a drop in the bucket." We need industry to reform and now. Fossil-fuel and natural-resource-related corporations are relentlessly extracting these resources, often with little regard for the consequences to the environment, indigenous people, and the surrounding land base and communities. Those things are just an unfortunate consequence of "progress." Enough of this insanity, folks. This is our planet, and we are here, as humans, for a reason. I refuse to accept that destroying our planet for greed, profit, keeping people dependent on these archaic, destructive methods of keeping humans comfortable are the purpose or even "progress." It is violent and destructive. I can watch a Hollywood movie in that genre if I need that sort of "entertainment," but this is no longer sustainable or healthy as our way of life.

Many scientists agree, at this current rate, and with the rising world population, coupled with the rising sea levels (melting ice caps, icebergs), the future might well be a bleak, polluted hell. Sure, we could all pretend this isn't happening, distract ourselves with media (sports, vid games, entertainment), visit the last (wealth sustained) clean environments (resort islands, amusement parks), but this is being narcissistic, selfish to leave these problems for our children, future generations. It is also immoral. Let us wake up, face these issues, demand that our elected "leaders" (financed by corporations - why?) address them, and collectively, peacefully make real progress to heal the planet, create sustainable communities (not more cities), and reduce and eliminate use of fossil fuels and destructive industry methodology. Habitats, species, and the even the oceans are dying -- this is a real emergency. If you think this is doomsayer talk, radical thinking, well, it will take radical, new thinking to address decades and decades of abuse to this fragile planet - the only one we have. Think. Act. Peacefully.

[note: I will add links, resources to support my claims, but wanted to post this urgent matter. I welcome discussion and comments, as long as commenters can do so intelligently, without use of abusive language and rhetoric. I can find that on other website posts and comments, so I hope this is a different forum, even if you disagree with me. Also, working on a longer thing, which I've been working on for many months now. A relative once said that I need more life experience to be a writer. Well, I beg to differ. I've been writing since 1996, and I've worked as a teacher, tour guide, salesman, insurance agent, carpenter's helper (one day), bar back (bartender's helper), landscaper, production assistant on films and commercials, camp director, and librarian. Probably missed something in there. Additionally, I've traveled to Paris, London, Amsterdam, Seattle, Vancouver, up and down the East Coast, from Florida to New York, to Bar Harbor, Maine. There are so many more stories and places to learn, write, and visit. Check out some of my links to read some of my work.

Tim J. America

Hello, Well wishes to you as we close up another year ... but "it ain't over yet."

A post to update the purpose and intention of this personal website, blog:

Purpose: to provide the curious and those seeking writing and editorial excellence information and examples of my writing and related services

Intention: to demonstrate my interests, passions, desire for excellence in writing projects, teaching, social justice, and democratic (free) speech.

Background: Published writer, poet, and a seasoned teacher. I have worked in education since 2001, and I have taught College Writing since 2007 -- teaching full-time (four and five sections per semester; 60 - 80 students total, on average, per semester), "part-time" (adjunct, contingent). Why part-time? Good question. My MS degree in Professional Writing was rigorous; I completed a long manuscript and a polished body of writing. For some odd reason, the degree is not considered "terminal," as are MFA or a PhD in English or a related field. My argument/position is that the Master's in Professional Writing should be the equivalent of at least an MFA. Until then, or I secure a terminal degree as traditionally defined, I continue to be marginalized, gratefully employed (thank you!) as a less-than-half-salary contractual worker. Thousands and thousands of others like me are in "the same boat," so I am not looking for sympathy or even empathy ... compassion would be appreciated. In this static economy, I am, again, very pleased to be serving the excellent higher education institutions I work for currently. Based on past evaluations from administrators and students, they are glad to have me. I have much talent, experience, and energy to offer.

If the tone here seems sarcastic or bitter, that is not my rhetorical intent. Stating the truth, in the West, often comes across to those in power or position to take such truthful statements (statements of facts) as critique or perhaps as justification to find another "warm body" to do the job. I believe this to be a generalization or myth; I have experienced nothing but professional relationships with my supervisors and colleagues. Although, I do admit, I do critique the entire higher education system (not individual colleges or universities following suit) for ramping up its dependency and use of contingent employees, ones that are not paid benefits, or minimal ones at that. Enough of this for now -- books and dozens of articles have been written on this important topic:
For more, seeThe New Faculty Majority (a non-profit) and their blog. Also, CCC has some articles on this issue, defending fair wages and employment practices for adjuncts. These seem to hardly get noticed, since the "industry" is not taking real steps toward change. I won't compare this progress to Congress and budget cuts or innovations to stimulate the economy, but I just did. Why change a good thing?

I hopefully raise my voice for fairness, fair wages, a living wage for such teachers and professors, many holding doctorate degrees and years of teaching experience. Higher Education needs to do the right thing and higher more tenure-track faculty, and closely examine and change its policies regarding adjunct faculty. We are clearly qualified to teach a majority of the undergraduate courses (statistics show adjuncts are, even at Harvard, Yale...), so, again, please address this important (life-affirming, yes) issue, beginning now. Thanks for reading this long appeal. In a highly competitive marketplace, the up-and-coming business is waiting for your message to fail so they can take over your accounts. And if you are the up-and-coming business, your message better be clear, engaging, and effective. The wrong or ignored comma or other punctuation might send the wrong message … that you are careless and sloppy, that details do not matter. This economy is not forgiving.

Do you have business communication, a memo, or an advertising letter that needs some help? Does it lack that “certain something”? Educators that have greatly influenced my teaching-writing style are Cheryl Brown, Peter Elbow, Clarinda Harriss, bell hooks [sic], and Nancy Sommers.

Some of my recent successes as of this summer:

- Won a National Endowment for the Humanities, NEH, grant to attend a week long academic workshop on Concord, Massachusetts: Center of Transcendentalism and Social Action in the 19th Century, July 2010.

- Poem, “Seven Seas Speak,” published in Yes, Poetry, an online journal, and acknowledged in Stevenson University’s A Library for a New University, a bibliography of faculty publications, 2010.

- Contributed cultural reviews to Glide Magazine and PopMatters.com, both respected in the music and media industry.

E-mail: info@timjnelson.com

Tim J. If we are merely training ourselves, and others, to follow instructions without questioning the status quo or without bringing new ideas to the table, what sort of business culture are we creating?

Of course, numerous jobs require basic training, technical skill, and concentration. But there is also the need for highly evolved communication and collaboration skills to develop dynamic business and social solutions. Being aware of and open to diverse perspectives, in addition to our own informed opinions, will create the flexibility necessary to succeed in public and business discourse.

This article, by Brent Staples, from the July 13, 2010, issue of The New York Times illustrates the challenge educators experience when teaching critical thinking -- some students choose to take short cuts, which means, if not corrected or used as "teachable moments," that they will likely take short cuts on their jobs and in life. Students who are able to investigate a topic or issue, read source material, develop their own questions and opinions, and present them in an effective report or essay will succeed on many levels. Teaching students the ethical use of source material, its effective integration, and giving them the tools for critical thinking, these skills are the basis of a diverse, open-minded, innovative workforce that is engaged in free, ethical, and progressive enterprise. More than ever, our campuses are fully engaged in preparing students to be active, skilled contributors to their fields. In that light, educators – full-time and adjunct – should be fully supported in all aspects of the term supported. Our – and the students’ – future depends on their success in acquiring these crucial analytical skills.

Tim J. In his latest book, he returns to the form that made him popular: the essay. According to the interview referenced here, some of the essays in this collection were written right before he submitted the manuscript to the publisher in May 2009. Eating the Dinosaur is this collection. Check it out. Currently, I am halfway through Irving's Last Night in Twisted River, and reading some poems by John Ashberry, while wearing slippers and smoking my pipe, of course. [No, not really -- smoking is really bad for you, as you know.]

Personally, as a busy parent & husband dude, I find it challenging, as other writers do, to find time to write these days. Years ago, I was able to type a few drafts of a screenplay while I was between jobs. When I got into education, I wrote on breaks and holidays, and I was able to complete another screenplay this way, along with some other writing. This is the glamorous life of a writer, at least in these united states, writing whenever you can until you can afford to write when you want. I wouldn't have it any other way, despite what my relatives might tell you. Oh, I grumble -- all writers do -- but (here comes the cliché ) living one's life and having real experiences are what living is all about. Sure, fiction writers can invent events and characters, but creating these from the inspiration of hard-edged life makes it realistic, creates the verisimilitude needed.

Support writers and local bookshops and keep reading. Thanks for reading this.

- Tim

Accelerated Learning Project (ALP) - College Writing

Since 2007, I have been teaching college composition and writing about literature. After getting my master's degree in professional writing - concentration in teaching writing - I began to teach at two Baltimore-area colleges. It is my pleasure to be working with Professor Peter Adams, the founder and creator of the Accelerated Learning Project (ALP) at the Community College of Baltimore Country (CCBC). This innovative developmental writing program allows motivated writers to simultaneously take basic writing and first-year composition. As a quick overview: in a traditional college-composition course (e.g. 101) of 18 - 20 students, eight students continue with the same instructor for a basic-writing workshop immediately after the traditional course, so back-to-back. The instructor stresses the skills needed to complete the 101's assignments. Exercises, in-class writing, discussions, peer review, and other techniques are employed by the instructor to instruct and accelerate successful college writing. The data on student success and the evidence that the program works are beyond impressive. See the link above for the data and more details. Additionally, many colleges are adapting the program (see the website for more). We are excited about an upcoming study by an outside party that will -- we are confident -- confirm the success of this dynamic course. Lastly, I will post some additional observations and journal entries here in the near future.

David Brown - Amazing Emerging Artist

Just attended David Brown's exhibit opening in Baltimore. I am very impressed, as always, with William Vollmann, who has yet another book out -- over eighteen total, and he was born 1959. In the past, the California-based prolific writer has won the National Book Award, among other honors. This one is titled IMPERIAL and is about Imperial County in California; it racks up to 1,300 pages, all focused on the Mexico-California border and all the drama that goes along with patrolling that border and trying to cross it.

Vollmann is holding my attention, mostly, with his RIDING TOWARD EVERYWHERE, which chronicles his adventures hopping rail cars. Yes, the man is adventurous and interested greatly in fringe cultures, the down-trodden.

After seeing Robert Dylan (aka Robert Zimmerman) in concert recently, at a minor-league stadium in Maryland, I am appreciating the multiple ways to view and appreciate America. It is still a great land with great potentiality. Also, check out the recent issue of Rolling Stone with its Dylan interview by Douglas Brinkley. Now Brinkley, a published historian and college professor, is another guy I need to read more of... where is the time to read and absorb, respond to, all this great culture? Let's get started (in here). - Tim

Year's End - Writing News, Books

Hello. It is nearly Christmas 2008. Hope this finds you well.

Currently, I am beginning to revise and rework a very rough draft of my first novel. There’s over 60,000 words to go through and I need to write more. I keep reminding myself that writing is rewriting. Recently, I am assisting a Baltimore-based small press edit some manuscripts. Well, really I am a reader, going through a few manuscripts to find some “gems.” This proves to be interesting and educational.

My other recent writing projects have been minimal but rewarding. A review of My Morning Jacket’s DC-area show is up on Popmatters.com, a well-respected, oft-quoted (by BBC, PBS, NPR…) music and culture website. Also, last spring I was a featured poet-reader as part of Towson University English Department’s Spring Reading Series. That was fun and an honor.
Currently I am reading some inspirational writing: Jon Krakauer’s INTO THE WILD and Bernard Malamud’s THE ASSISTANT. One non-fiction (the story of Chris McCandless) and the other a novel.

As poet Clarinda Harriss says, "Onward!"

Please see the right sidebar for links to my writing. Lists are now an essential part of American Pop Culture and the world over, too. For better or worse, we’re consumers of all sorts of media and information, in addition to our dietary needs. So here's some stuff:

Recent Reads:

Siddhartha by Herman Hesse - reading for a book club.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret - a cool graphic novel set in Paris during the 1930s.

Movies:

Into the Wild, directed by Sean Penn – finally saw this engaging, thought-provoking film.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – highly entertaining in a campy film-noir style. Luckily, even though Lucas was involved, no obnoxious Jar Jar characters.

Books on Writing - Some of the Best

For creative writers, there are myriad books that will provide inspiration and information on the craft. If you are looking for advice on character development, plot construction, scene descriptions, and overall writer-centered resources, the following might help. I’ve listed some of my favorite books on writing – believe me, I’ve read a ton of ’em. Books on writing cannot make us better writers, but they can inspire ideas and give some insight to an often-mysterious craft. Enjoy.

No particular order:

How to Write by Richard Rhodes. One of the first I ever read. Good, straightforward, sound advice.

On Writing by Stephen King. The master of horror and suspense gives away some of his secrets.

Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. One of the best.

Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg. Creative, inspirational writing tips and motivation. Includes some great exercises.

Story by Robert McKee. Designed for screenwriters, but has excellent information and advice on plotting strong stories and creating believable characters.

Making Your Own Days by Kenneth Koch. A great book on writing poetry by one of the masters of the genre.

Fun with Grammar

Woe is I by Patricia O’Connor. Grammar advice with a sense of humor. Who knew?

And if you still need more inspiration, try viewing Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited. Writing while working another job is even more challenging. Some of the links here might motivate and inspire you to write something from your heart. Writing from the heart is about the most honest thing you can do as a serious writer. There are a lot of books getting published, but only a small percentage is actually successful. Seems like many publishers are willing to take risks on the “next great writer,” but if that first book doesn’t sell well, then the odds of a multi-book deal with that publisher are very low.

What can we do to improve our chances of getting published, and getting the lucrative publishing contracts? Well, we can write the best possible work we can and make sure it is passionate, bold, honest, daring, and, yes, “from the heart.” See this link to Ann Kroeker's blog form more inspiration and thoughts.

In rewriting my current novel, I’m trying to strip the prose down to the barest of sentences without taking away essential elements like character, voice, and description.

Of course, finding the time to write – and rewrite – is also very challenging if you have other commitments. But to consider yourself a serious writer, put butt to chair and fingers to keys every day. Write something every day. More serious goals – a novel, short story, several poems – will require more commitment and looking at your writing with fresh eyes. Living life and enjoying other interests also builds experience that you can later write about. To create art, or at least readable, engaging writing, you need to work on it. Hopefully it’s a form of work you love and have to pull yourself away from. Good writing.

Need Ticket/Pass to AWP Conference - NYC !

The AWP Writer's Conference is at the end of this month...

I hope you have tickets and ... Writers & Editors Connect

On Saturday, May 5, I attended the Conversations and Connections conference at The Writer's Center in Bethesda, Maryland. It was ginormously fun and informative – even for an outsider like me. Oh, sure, I look conservative and cocksure, but I am a self-consumed artist type that would rather spend time reading, writing, talking about books and film, and playing my guitars. Who wouldn’t?

It was great to see so many writers venture outside of their abodes (or trailers) and commingle. I met some new friends, editors, great journals, and had some excellent stir-fry around the corner from The Center during lunch. A great way to spend a Saturday.

Bought two new (to me) journals while at the conference: BARRELHOUSE and met some of its editors – hip, well-spoken guys, wish I could’ve stayed down in the DC area for their anniversary after party. Maybe next time. Also, got a copy of GARGOYLE. Both contain great art and writing – cracked into them last evening.

This was inspirational, educational, non-habit forming – OK, maybe it was – and, again, a great social gathering of creative souls. Especially having read numerous books on film and visual imagery, e.g. Ways of Seeing by Berger, Story by Robert McKee, and In the Blink of an Eye by Walter Murch, my expectations are high when offering up eight to ten dollars for a film experience. Also, I should share that my film interests are wide: classic, Film Noir, films by John Hughes, David Lynch, Tim Burton (most of them), Alex Cox, Spike Jonze, and films written by Charles Kaufman, among others.

So recently I saw The Pursuit of Happyness starring Will Smith and his son. I entered the film house with little expectation of what it would be like other than the general media buzz that it was good. Being critical of the media, I knew that this was not a guarantee of finding it satisfying, but I went to see a drama about a working-class man who confronts the many challenges encountered when “climbing the ladder” of success or “pulling oneself up by one’s bootstraps.” The film engaged me and brought forth emotion. That being said, I consider it a successful film.

Visually, the city of San Francisco is stunning and a stark contrast against Smith’s character’s humble apartment and hotel rooms in which his family lives. Without giving away too much plot, in case you have not yet seen this film, I will keep the discussion general. Again, being a veteran of filmmaking and its techniques, I was happily engrossed in the storytelling enough to forget that a crew was hovering outside of each frame – a difficult thing for me to accomplish usually. This is not innovative, earth-shattering movie making – as some on rottentomatoes.com apparently expected – but an engaging, heartfelt story of struggle in our often heartless economic system. Yes, some of the characters are stereotypical and thinly written. Overall, the viewer witnesses a moving tale of one family’s survival and disappointments, which either strengthens their determination or breaks their will. The son – Smith’s actual son – is a brilliant, believable actor. Personally, I have never seen Will Smith in a better film or performance – one forgets all about the radically opposite role he played in Fresh Prince of Bel Air. He deserves awards and recognition for Happyness. He will get it.

So, in review, here is how the film “roped me in”:

- Strong characters and narrative (traditionally linear in fashion)
- A believable story with drama and conflict building in tension
- A classic release of tension in the story’s resolution, however, one might decide it is too predictable; I did not – the actual scenes and dialogue making up the resolution were fresh and consistent with the story arc.

If you, as I often am, are looking for non-traditional forms of storytelling and filmmaking – Big Fish, Brazil, Magnolia, Being John Malkovich… – then this is not going to satisfy. However, if you are seeking a life-affirming human story of struggle and success, even more convincing or at least as heartfelt as Rudy, then Happyness is that sort of film. - Tim J. Welcome or welcome back. If you read this blog and enjoy it, pls let me know.

Rockin' Fun: I worked my way into free tix to V-Fest Baltimore - American Inaugural - by pitching a review to a respectable, engaging, and up-and-coming online music pub (see links following). See my write-up for my thoughts on this amazing day of live music, which was mostly rock with a bit of club, trance, and Americana tossed in. This assemblage of diverse people was, overall, a success. Dare I say the spirit of the '60s was present here?

OK, a teaser: the Who, the Killers, Wolfmother, the Raconteurs, Flaming Lips, and others were there. I wanted to interview some bands, but alas, my venture into medical sales, insurance marketing, and other nonsensical diversions somehow have delayed my rock-journalism greatness. In other words, Rolling Stone should be calling any moment... or, realistically, I need to pitch to their editors. Feel free to write them and demand a column by me -- I'd appreciate the plug.

Anyway, here's the link and enjoy. The theory being that produce bought locally supports local markets and farmers, and it reduces the consumption of fossil fuels and the amount of pollution produced created by shipping out-of-season goods (e.g., berries in winter in the East) to our "yuppie" communities. Growing and producing organic foods does not create pesticide and toxic run-off (or at least not manmade run-off - large amounts of natural fertilizers can be harmful also) which can leech into our soil and waterways.

Obviously, these are habits that we can change and implement gradually, but it is urgent that we start now, despite what you think of Al Gore. Many people and communities are already doing this. We will follow your example. Please share your ideas. Remember when recycling was a new idea? (Maybe you don't.) Recycling is now part of my lifestyle, despite it being a pain-in-the-butt... I feel it is my responsibility as a homeowner and consumer; we, as a society, create so much waste.

What else can be done? We can renew, reuse, and recycle things that we normally throw away. Again, being aware and thoughtful about our actions and decisions. For many raised in the "Me Generation," this means being less self-centered. Americans are used to getting what they want, when they want it. Things have changed, my friends. We must change or know that we've done nothing to help our children and future generations live happy, healthy, and productive lives. Of course, if one is self-centered (egotistical), their response might be: "Who gives a damn? I'll do what I want, when I want." If that is you, realize that you are not a bad person (just selfish) but need to change some habits and think about how everyone's actions affect everyone and everything else. Probably one of the reasons the world hasn't changed much since barbaric times (violence, crime, racism...) is because as societies we are still failing to think in a multi-perspective way. Let's start acting like people who do give a damn. It means growing up and acting like informed, intelligent adults as a country and world community.

The Word on Words... in the news and noteworthy

Random Literary Notes and Links:

- BOA Editions, a literary press, celebrates its 30th Year Anniversary.
Li-Young Lee is one of the outstanding poets they publish. However, I do scan it just about every week as part of my job (book acquisitions), but find the LIBRARY JOURNAL’s reviews as informative, if not more balanced between fiction and non-fiction – one of the LitBloggers apparent beefs with the NYTBR. I really appreciate the underdog and underground, so my heart and support go to the LitBloggers.

More importantly, there were books recommended by some of the panel participants (and recent NYTBR jurors for the What is the Bestest [sic] Work of Fiction Ever [Ever being the lifespan of a twenty-five year old]?) Cynthia Ozick recommended William Gaddis’s Carpenter’s Gothic and critic Liesl Schillinger stated Anne Tyler’s Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant as favorite novels. Schillinger also mentioned Jonathan Foer and David Foster Wallace as edgy young writers.

WHAT I’M READING: more than 100 pages into Vollmann’s 13 Stories and 13 Epitaphs (1992)

BLOG I’M CHECKING OUT: Good Books Guide Blog

Now, back to the paper I'm writing (or not writing)...

BookExpo DC - Truth About Fiction and more

Through the generosity of my employer, I went to the DC BookExpo at the DC Convention Center yesterday (5-18-06). The weekend events were more attractive, but, alas, my schedule would not allow such literary joy.

I attended some cool and informative workshops/seminars on blogging, international literature, and the soon-to-be infamous New York Times Book Review pick for Best Work of American Fiction of the Last 25 Years. The winner is... well go to NY TIMES to see.
Otherwise you'll have to wait until this Sunday's edition (conference attendees got a sneak preview). The panel was interesting and some egos were larger than others. See more details by reading Ed Champion's blog post about him questioning Sam T. about the nature of the NYTBR and why there isn't more fiction covered within, or women critics. I was sitting one row behind this Brownie Sender [see Ed Champion story] and it jazzed up what could've been a bore fest.

The moderator, and NYTBR editor, Sam Tanenhaus ("The Vulgarist"), used the forum primarily to plug the BOOK REVIEW, its literary merit, and his "choice" of reviewers, some assembled were Liesl Schillinger, Tom Mallon, and Cynthia Ozick. Actually, the jurors that selected the novels were academics, writers, critics, and other literary sorts that were sent letters (over 200) by Tanenhaus's staff (Greg Cowles). Mostly men replied and their votes were counted. The winner suprised literary Cynthia Ozick, who praised the writer's use of poetic form and themes, but felt other fiction is more worthy of the title: Best Work of American Fiction of the Last 25 Years (according to the establishment). Seriously, for all the talk that there aren't that many young writers on the list of jurors, well what about Dave Eggers, Chabon, Rick Moody, Lorrie Moore and Vollmann? I guess some aren't as young as their publicists make them seem, but their writing is fresh and young.

The highlight of the opening day (next to the Brownie War), for me, was keynote speaker Tim Russert. One cannot say bad things about Mr. Russert without feeling, well, bad. I had no expectations of the event beforehand, so was warmed, entertained, and inspired by his American stories. The son of a trash man, he told many stories of how fathers, and parents, impact the lives of their children. He spoke emotionally about his own father and humbly pitched his newest offering, THE WISDOM OF OUR FATHERS. I will put this on my summer reading list. The book contains some heartfelt letters in response to Russert's first book, BIG RUSS AND ME.

Washington, DC was bustling with activity as always. It had been about a year since I had visited and luckily I know the city well from my days as a technical recruiter (yuk!) and managed healthcare representative (also yuk, but with greater compensation). The teaser at the convention was seeing all the exhibitors loading in their wares and setting up their booths. Right, conference attendees on Thursday could not visit the exhibition area at all. Being a book lover and writer, I was eager to mill about the hall meeting agents, fellow writers, and publishers. Maybe next year. Additionally, they also have a concurrent writer's conference connected with - usually before - the Book Expo.

My favs are McSweeney's, Daedalus Books, and Soft Skull Press, but I was unable to grab hands with their representatives (I'll look on the Brightside, call me Mr. Brightside, since this meant less germ exposure. Howie Mandel would be proud).

What is Sacred?

In our busy, sensory overloaded lives, we all struggle to find sacred moments - connections to each other and to nature. If not, well, then we're not feeling too human, robotic is more like it. That is my opinion and if you're on a blog about books, music, thoughts, well, maybe you feel the same way.

Finding the time to cherish life and its precious, diminishing moments is a real challenge. For me, finding the time for family and work (outside of the paycheck) that is rewarding and purposeful is important.

Books to me are also sacred. It is the aura of the author's spirit and voice that radiates from them. The sweat and toil that have gone into their writing, revision, and creation. As I read before in a quote from another booklover, it is good to surround ourselves with books. We can hope to read as many as possible, cherish their adventure and experiences, their knowledge, and some, even though we might not finish, we at least tried to understand and appreciate the author's voice and message, although maybe it did not speak to us as others might.

One of my goals for this year is getting out and hiking and walking more. Experience the natural world that is slowly (more rapidly of late) dwindling away, mostly in the name of "progress" and development. I want to read and study more on how we as a species can better manage our resources and work with the land instead of always taking, taking, taking from it. There is much to learn from native peoples and their holistic approach to living in concert with nature and not trying to conquer her. Conquering her could be to our demise. For me, there is no "could," it will cause our demise. Until later, happy reading and living. - CF

Cool Reading List from a Thinking Musician

One of my favorite musicians, and writers, Neil Peart is the topic of this short blog log. His website -- www.neilpeart.net -- has a page called Bubba's Book Club where he gives his opinion and suggestions for stimulating reads. Check it out.

In the 1970s, my friends and I waited behind the (then) Capital Centre to meet Rush after a show. We were hopeful and sure enough the trio emerged one at a time. If I remember correctly, first Neil, rushing up the ramp and to the tour bus with a green hooded sweatshirt shrouding his visage. My powers of observation detected his likeness and I yelled, "Hey, Neil!" My friend and I thrust our tour books (about ten bucks or maybe five back then -- tickets were "dirt cheap" then also). He hesitated then started to climb the bus's steps. "C'mon, Neil," I pleaded. He obliged, but clearly did not feel comfortable in the "Limelight" for it surely was not the universal dream for him.

Years later, and after many rock musician interviews, that teenage encounter with Rush -- folks lined up for fifty to seventy yards long to get Geddy's autograph -- still brings me nostalgic joy. Their music and call to individuality was instrumental in my formative years. Well, enough geezing. Happy Holidays. Happy reading. Check out some of my writing (and links) while you're here. - CF (you might discover that this is not my real name. My goal is to have 12 - 15 good stories by end of 2006, and then I'll focus on my novel idea, which I've begun to flesh out.

Music is always good inspiration and I've been listening to rock lately, in addition to jazz radio and my jazz standards CDs. Foo Fighters new one IN YOUR HONOR is a great package of straight-ahead and acoustical compositions. After seeing Modest Mouse on TV last year, I bought a couple of their CDs. Great stuff. Flaming Lips ...PINK ROBOTS... is on regular rotation as is their SOFT BULLETIN release.

Looking for some bands and artists to work with for press releases and basic promotional assistance. I've done this for bands in the Baltimore area and really enjoy it.

Need Press Kits?

Musicians, artists, innovators...

I will write clean, active copy that will promote your accomplishments to record labels, galleries, venues, and more.
